Wooden signs indicating various types of ramen available at the restaurant the stairs lead to. In place of table menus, long-ago eateries in Japan had smaller versions of these wooden signs hanging from the wall inside. Printed menus are now commonplace, but many more traditional establishments continue to use the wooden signs as well.

@Jerry: Thanks, Jerry. Because I take almost all of my shots at a considerable distance, the bulk of them require quite a bit of modification before they are fit to post here. I felt like quite a phony only showing the finished product and perhaps making myself look like a more skillful photographer than I really am, so I decided to start a "Truth In Photography" policy with heavily modified photos in order to calm my guilty conscience.
Wonderful shot and I really enjoyed the history of it too!

@Jen: Thank you. I enjoyed sharing it and knew that it would be meaningless without some background. Sometimes photos just can't do a thorough job of speaking for themselves.
