Detail of a large roadside poster placed by the Tokyo police seeking witnesses to a January 2006 traffic accident. Painstakingly hand-lettered signs such as these are no longer common, having largely been replaced by "fill-in-the-blank" pre-printed signs, their blanks filled with indifferent specimens of calligraphy. The cop who made this sign was obviously a man of considerable talent, something increasingly rare in this modern age in which machines do most of our writing for us.

That's very cool, thanks for placing it in context. It's nice to think that people take pride in small parts of their jobs like this. Nicely captured and framed too, great work!

Michael, Hey! Mom sent me your link after Aunt Becky sent it to her. You do great work. One of my favorites is the girl at the bus stop. I wish you still lived close enough to give me some tips. Alea

@Stephanie: Glad you enjoyed it.
The story and the image are wonderful...in these days of instand technology it is so wonderful to see when someone does it by hand and takes great pride in their work. Thank you for sharing!

@Jen: Glad to do it and glad you enjoyed it. My Japanese handwriting looks like a three year old applying fingerpaint in the dark with his elbow, so I really admire anyone who has done the hard work to learn to write elegantly. My boss has fantastic handwriting, and loves to leave undecipherable notes in it.
