Kitchen Window

Posted by Mike Cash (Kiryu, Japan) on 21 April 2007 in Abstract & Conceptual.

A peeping tom view into the kitchen window of a Japanese home. Most items, even in silhouette, are perfectly recognizable: detergent on the window sill; pans and skillets hanging from hooks. The large rectangular object is a tankless water heater. The two hoses going up to it are for gas and water. The shorter line with a bulbous end is the faucet, with stream and shower option.

Tankless water heaters are the norm in Japanese homes. Even baths and showers are normally heated with tankless heaters. Many bath heaters have the ability to reheat the water already in the tub, allowing successive members of the household to take a hot bath. (Japanese wash outside the tub and use the tub strictly for a good hot soak).
