Tape

I haul intermodal containers into and out of the ports of Tokyo and Yokohama. When empty containers are returned, the crew of the container yard inspects it for damage.

They stick a couple of pieces of tape on the rear and the side of the containers, marked with the date the container was returned.

Since most yards do hundreds of these every day, they find it convenient to use lull periods to make up a big batch of date-marked tape to have on hand for the next rush. I was down at the Daiichi Kouun empty container yard at Shinagawa Wharf on the 29th, bright and early in the morning, and found these strips of tape the crew had prepared before going home the previous day.
