@Dan: The entire platform area is enclosed in glass, with doors that match up with where the train doors are when the train stops. They open in tandem, sort of like the double doors of an elevator. Some train lines in Tokyo are employing either this floor-to-ceiling version or a waist-high version to prevent accidents and suicides.
