Corporal Arai, Killed in Action

Posted by Mike Cash (Kiryu, Japan) on 9 August 2008 in Miscellaneous and Portfolio.

The rear and left sides of the tombstone for Corporal Fumiyoshi Arai, who died in combat August 12, 1943 in the Pion Highlands of Papua New Guinea, aged 24. The stone was erected in September 1945, after the close of the war, by Saku Arai (presumably his mother). He was the fourth son of Tashichi Arai.

Had he lived, he would have been the same age as my late father-in-law, also an Imperial Japanese Army veteran, who we bid farewell in June of this year.
