常鑑寺其の壱

Posted by Mike Cash (Kiryu, Japan) on 4 February 2009 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

The bell of Joukanji, a Buddhist temple back up in the mountains north of Omama. The bell was cast in 1748 and is designated an important cultural treasure by the prefectural government. You'd expect a designated important cultural treasure to be housed indoors and preserved, perhaps, but this bell is still in normal use at the temple and is housed outside under a typical open-sided housing.
