In the movie The Sand Pebbles Steve McQueen's character, working in the engine room of the river gunboat San Pueblo attempts to explain the mysteries of the steam engine to a Chinese assistant named Po-Han. He tells Po-Han that the power that makes the engine move is "Live Steam" and then by means of charades acts out the live steam going through the engine and pushing the pistons. Po-Han isn't able to pronounce "live steam" and pronounces it "live stem".
